Vocabulary Building:The Essential Skills For ESL learners

Skills to Build Your Vocabulary.

As a foreigner
in USA, English is crucial because it is their everyday language. In order to understand English, among the tools that we need to have is good vocabulary. Lots of my friends have been asking me how to increase word power i.e vocabulary. Do we have to remember the long list of SAT or GRE vocabulary in order to achieve that?

My answer is simple, I tell them to use the words in their daily life. How to study for it? Well, to tell you the truth, at first I do memorize those words as well, but alhamdulillah, I found a very good book and I suggest that you buy this book from here. It is cheap and insha Allah you will reap the benefits from your $5.99 investment. J

These are the methods and the examples that I take from Merriam-Webster’s Vocabulary Builder. Please do read to this end so that you will know how true is my notion and how  valuable is this book  to you.

The fact is that we tend to remember words easily and naturally when they appear in some meaningful text, when they have been shown to be useful and therefore worth remembering, and when they have been properly explained to us. Knowing precisely how to use a word is just as important as knowing what it means, and this book provides that needed additional information.”(Introduction Section, pg vii)

A knowledge of knowing Latin and Greek roots will help you to remember the meanings of the words in this book but it will also enable you to guess at the meanings of new words that you run into elsewhere. Remember what a root means and you will have at least the fighting chance of understanding a word in which it appears.”(Introduction Section, pg viii)

“Studies have shown that the only way a new word will remain alive in your vocabulary is if it is regularly reinforced through the use and through the reading. Learn the word here and look and listen for it elsewhere-you will probably find yourself running into it frequently, just as when you have bought a new car you soon realize how many other people own the same model. .”(Introduction Section, pg viiii)

Start using the word immediately. As soon as you feel confident with a word, start trying to work into your writing wherever appropriate-your papers and reports, your diary and your poetry. An old proverb saying goes, “ Use it three times and it is yours.” (Introduction Section, pg x)

  EXAMPLES GIVEN BY THE BOOK:

BELL comes from the Latin word meaning “war.” Bellona was the little known Roman goddess of war, her husband Mars, was the god of war. (See how the example gives meaning to you J)

Antebellum-existing before a war, especially before the American Civil War.

Bellicosse- warlike, aggressive, quarrelsome.

Belligerence-aggressiveness,combativeness.
