Education Symposium Part Two

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

Name:

Name of Session: Creating the Modern Teacher Classroom Management That Works

Presenter (Name, Position, Educational Affiliation/School District, etc.):

Allen Painter

Principal, Cleveland High School

Cleveland, Texas

Brief Description of the Session:

The presenter gave tips and strategies to be applied to ensure smooth classroom lessons. He explained the criteria of proper preparation that could help to prevent poor performance. He focused more on preventive disruptive behaviors and steps to ensure success. I believe Teacher in Control is the key for that. He uses a book by Fred Jones as his guidelines.

In the sections below, identify 2-3 examples of the sociocultural, linguistic, academic, and cognitive benefits that you gained from attending the session as a future teacher of CLD students. Given the presentation, you may not be able to identify 2-3 examples for each area, but I will be looking for a minimum of 6 total benefits in at least two of the areas below. In addition to identifying overall benefits, please try to identify 3-5 classroom tips that you gained from the session (place these tips in the most appropriate area(s) below).

Sociocultural Benefits

It is very important for teachers to understand the need of students by knowing students motivation. Achieving this, need the teacher to do pre assessment and collecting the pertinent data such as health issues, personal info (taboos, do’s and don’ts) and etc.

Teacher should involve parents too and it is very good if the teacher can maintain this good relationship, not just contacting parents when kids have problem.

Classroom Tips:

Nurturing the students by knowing what the student needs. Actually, this can be identified by following the guidelines of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Teacher needs to know the appropriate behaviors too when dealing with students especially CLD students.

Send positive post cards and messages about students, or call parents and report positive behavior and achievements as well as any problems that may arise.

Linguistic Benefits

Students can improve their speaking skill if the teacher practices Q&A session with students. This can be done by meeting and greeting at doors.

Classroom Tips:

4 Questions Technique for Classroom Management:

Teacher can use this technique to get students focus back. It is important anyway for teacher to never use sarcasm when asking students.

Cooperative Learning:

Teacher can arrange students table to encourage interaction/group discussion, however, the arrangement must be accordingly so teacher can easily move to develop contact with students. It is very helpful to make them “behave” and to monitor them.

Academic Benefits

Students can only learn if they have “study behaviors”. Teacher can help them to build the study behaviors by focusing on:

a) Being consistent with classroom rules or “learning to mean business.”

b) Organized, Be Consistent.

Classroom Tips:

Learning to mean Business:

Staying calm, by avoiding small disruptions become big.

No means No. Never screaming and hollering as they don’t work. It makes disruptive behaviors escalate.

Organized Teacher:

Students will learn and benefit more as they will be impressed and get through the syllabus or lessons.

It means the teacher will ensure students pay attention, do the home works and assignments.

Cognitive Benefits

Cognitive and Socio cultural benefits are interrelated as students learn from background schemata (which is always cultural) and different learning styles. It is important for teacher classroom management to provide effective and positive learning environment.

Classroom Tips:

Among the strategies that teacher can use in classroom settings are:

a) Group discussion

b) Cooperative learning

c) Teacher using variety of materials beside textbooks.

d) Varied and enriched lesson plans to stimulate students and avoid boredom.
